BEST Project

Bringing Education, Systems-Change and Technical Assistance to You

Breastfeeding exclusively and extensively is a strong first step in obesity prevention. Research has found that the foundation for successful breastfeeding begins in the hospital and clinics prenatally and continues during labor and delivery and the few hours and days that follow.  Maternity care practices in hospitals can greatly affect breastfeeding outcomes. With funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Community Transformation Grant and in partnership with the LA County Department of Public Health, BreastfeedLA, the Breastfeeding Task Force of Greater Los Angeles has developed the BEST Project.

Launched worldwide in 1992, the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is a joint project of the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF.  The goal of the initiative is to recognize hospitals and maternity centers that demonstrate their commitment to providing a positive environment for breastfeeding mothers by fulfilling the rigorous standards outlined in the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding at Those hospitals that follow these standards can become designated as a Baby-Friendly hospital.

The BEST Project has engaged hospitals and clinics within Los Angeles County to receive coaching and technical support to improve maternity care and pediatric practices that support breastfeeding.  Hospitals selected to participate in this project will be working to achieve Baby-Friendly designation.
