Dr. Sharon Tan, PsyD 

Sharon Tan, Psy.D. is a licensed Clinical Psychologist in the State of California for the past 10 years. She has experience providing therapy services across all ages and currently works part-time as a Psychologist in the NICU at Miller Children’s and Women’s Hospital.  She also sees clients in private practice. She has extensive experience in community mental health settings having worked with a contract mental health provider and then eventually with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental health (LAC DMH) where she monitored a program that assessed children initially detained by the child welfare system. At LAC DMH, she was also responsible for building collaboration amongst birth to 5 professionals in the community and organizing trainings on birth to five issues. She is a graduate fellow from the Infant-Parent Mental Health Post-Graduate Certificate Program from the University of Massachusetts and was trained by Maternal Mental Health NOW and 2020mom on maternal mental health issues.  Sharon is a California endorsed Infant-Family & Early Childhood Mental Health Specialist and is passionate about helping young children thrive through nurturing relationships and strengthening communities by building strong families. She is a presenter, trainer, consultant and the title she is most proud of is ‘mother’ of two lovely daughters.

Stephanie Hazzard, MA

Stephanie Hazzard is a Marriage and Family Therapist who received her master’s degree from National University. She currently works as the Program Coordinator for the Adaptive and Social Skills Department at A Change in Trajectory (ACT). She is the co-president of The San Fernando Valley Mocha Moms and a mother of 3 amazing children. She is currently working on building her non-profit organization called Stir It Up, Inc, which aims to provide crucial mental health support for youth so they can excel in their future endeavors. Ms. Hazzard is passionate about public speaking and working with families, teens, and mothers by helping them achieve their self-care goals.

Mental Health & Breastfeeding Considerations When Supporting NICU Parents

Objectives

Following the didactic presentations, participants will be able to:

1)   Identify 4 risk factors for postpartum mood disorders in NICU moms.
2)   Discuss 2 cultural factors to consider when evaluating and treating postpartum mood disorders.
3)   Identify 3 common presentations of postpartum mood disorders in NICU moms
4)   Discuss 3 successful treatment interventions to consider when someone is identified as symptomatic.

5)   Explain 2 factors that contribute to building a thriving parent-child relationship in the NICU.

6)   Assess 2 self-care skill sto help with the prevention of postpartum mood disorders.

7)  Analyze and explain the spectrum of feeding methods and identify 2 alternative and supplements utilized in the NICU.

Dr. Sharon SY Tan and Stephanie Hazzard  will discuss the intersectionality between maternal mental health and breastfeeding focusing on parents and babies of the NICU. The presentation will cover both clinical and cultural aspects that need consideration when providing support to parents whose baby have visited or currently are in the NICU. Furthermore, the presentation will discuss factors of postpartum mood disorders such as the conversations that are not occuring, treatments available, the importance of self-care, and creating a support system.
